How we started
GreenFoot’s proprietor, Gary Esguerra, is a marine engineer by profession who has served the maritime industry for twenty years and counting. Being mindful of the environment has already been second nature to him since he also served as the environmental officer on board tanker vessels.
In 2019, the Department of Labor and Employment’s (DOLE) division for Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs), National Reintegration for OFWs (NRCO), together with the Integrated Seafarers of the Philippines (ISP), conducted its fifth annual business plan competition for seafarers.
Having no background or prior knowledge on how to run a business, Gary took a step of faith and joined the competition. He has long wanted to start his own company to make it possible for him and his family to stay on land for good.

He banked on his experience and care for the environment for his business idea. As a seafarer, he has stayed in numerous hotels and received complimentary room slippers and personal hygiene products. Yet, most of these one-time-use items are made of non-biodegradable or non-recyclable materials. Thus, the idea of “GreenFoot: Biodegradable Disposable Slippers” was born and became Gary’s entry to the competition. Consequently, GreenFoot would be declared the fifth champion of the 2019 NRCO-ISP Business Plan Competition.

GreenFoot’s win was just the beginning of a rather challenging journey. Even before the company could gain momentum as a start-up, the pandemic hit the world in early 2020, and the hospitality industry was dramatically affected. However, instead of closing shop, GreenFoot saw the hurdle as an opportunity to better its products and processes. We took every opportunity to learn more and to collaborate with government agencies such as the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) for its iForward Program for start-up businesses, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), and the Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority (PHILFIDA) for consultation and guidance.
Wherever this journey may take us, our resolve remains firm: GreenFoot will always be about these two things: being mindful of the environment and seeking the benefit of the Filipino worker.
